None of us were born with life skills, and they are NOT simply picked up by association. Life skills must be developed and fostered. The lessons of this program target learning skills to assist with managing thoughts, actions, and emotions to achieve goals. These skills help the child to consider alternative perspectives and respond to changing circumstances (cognitive flexibility). They assist in keeping the information in one’s mind for successful usage (working memory). These skills help youth learn to be aware and to resist automatic and impulsive behavior (inhibitory control) so that they can engage in goal-directed reasoning and problem-solving.

Life skills have been linked to success in school, family, community, life, health, and wealth in adulthood. They have been shown to be even more important than IQ for future success. Since studies show us that developing these skills is critical in life's success. Why should we wait to begin to develop these skills in our future leaders?

Let's provide them with A Champion's Start.

Focus and Self-Control is a skill that is much needed for children to achieve goals, in a world filled with distractions and information overload. This includes paying attention, exercising self-control, remembering the rules, and thinking flexibility.

Critical Thinking

Self- Directed Engaged Learning

By setting goals and strategies for learning, children become attuned and better prepared to change as the world changes. This helps children foster their innate curiosity to learn, and helps them realize their potential.

This skill helps children analyze and evaluate information to guide their beliefs, decisions and actions. Children need critical thinking to make sense of the world around them and to solve problems.

This Life Skill is at the heart of learning: figuring out what’s the same, what’s different, and sorting them into categories. Making unusual connections is at the core of creativity and moves children beyond knowing information to using information well.

A vital life skill is a social competence or the ability to elicit positive responses from others. This competency requires a character-based understanding of respectful behavior towards others. It is of the utmost importance for students to be able to approach life situations in a way that demonstrates respect. This calls for positive social responses to themselves, engaging with authority figures, and peers.

This involves understanding what others think and feel, and forms the basis for children’s understanding of the intentions of parents, teachers, and friends. This skill can help children be less likely to engage in violent conflicts.

Bravery

Bravery is the mental and emotional attitude and ability to deal with difficult, challenging, and sometimes seemingly impossible, and fearful circumstances. It is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, intimidation, and other threats while bravely holding onto your standards and values. In a time when peer and environmental pressure happens at such an early age, we need to equip our children with a brave attitude.
